Start with one question

Reading notes can begin with a question rather than a summary. What is the author trying to explain? Which claim needs support? What would change your understanding of the subject? Choose one question and return to it as you read.

Distinguish the author from yourself

Use separate labels for the author’s argument and your response. A disagreement is easier to examine when you can identify the exact claim you disagree with. Record the chapter or page so you can check it later.

Finish with an unresolved point

A useful note does not have to settle the subject. It can end with an unanswered question, a term to investigate, or a connection to another book. This demo article uses original sample prose and does not reproduce passages from published books.
